Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
is a condition that affects a person’s mood, self image and
physical condition. People suffering from depression often feel an
overwhelming sense of sadness, have a pessimistic outlook and lose
interest in things that they once enjoyed. Depression also has an
impact on the body, effecting sleeping and eating patterns and causing
headaches and fatigue.
Some people may only experience one depressive episode, but many
others will have several episodes over their lifetime. Some people
will experience both depressive and manic episodes. See Bipolar
Disorder.
Dealing with depression can be a difficult experience. No matter
how hard you try, you can’t seem to get rid of the feelings of sadness. Even though you want to look on the bright side, your
outlook remains gloomy. You constantly put yourself down. You cry
for no reason, you can’t focus on school or work, and soon
enough you feel as though there is no hope. Although things may
seem grim, help is available. SPRI is currently researching innovative
medications to treat your depression.
Depression also affects families and loved ones. It can be very
upsetting to see a friend or family member feel unhappy. No matter
what you do, you can’t seem to cheer them up. Depression is
different than the average “blues.” It is a serious
condition that requires professional help.
